What it is
Renters insurance is a policy that pays to replace your belongings if they are stolen, destroyed, or damaged. and also covers you if someone gets hurt in your apartment and sues you.
By the numbers
If a pipe bursts and ruins your laptop, TV, furniture, and clothes, you could easily be looking at $8,000 in losses. A renters insurance policy that covers up to $30,000 in personal property costs roughly $15 a month, or $180 a year.
How it works
You pay a monthly premium (a fixed fee to keep the policy active). If something covered happens. a break in, a fire, a water leak. you file a claim, pay a deductible (your out of pocket share, typically $500), and the insurer pays the rest up to your coverage limit.
The catch
Your policy only covers the cash value of your stuff unless you specifically choose replacement cost coverage. Cash value means a 3 year old laptop that cost $1,200 might only pay out $400 because of depreciation (the lost value as items age). Replacement cost coverage pays what it actually costs to buy that laptop new today. and usually adds only $2 to $3 per month.
